Summer Teacher Workshops

Offerings for Summer 2017

We are in the planning stages for summer 2017 professional development program offerings. Applications and information for these programs will be posted on our website in the early spring.

The Life Sciences Outreach Program at Harvard University will be offering Amgen Biotech Experience professional development institutes for local high school teachers during the summer and applications will be available in spring 2016. The program is for teachers interested in bringing biotechnology into their classrooms.

Summer Program Format from 2003-2010

Each July from 2003-2010, LSO invited 18 teachers to immerse themselves in research on a specific topic in molecular and cellular biology and produce educational multimedia based on that research.

This ten-day program integrated faculty lectures and laboratories with workshops on educational media and technology. The faculty lectures and laboratories led by post-doctoral fellows and graduate students were designed to deepen the knowledge base of high school teachers.

By the end of the program, each teacher produced a lesson that uses multimedia to present some aspect of what they learned to their students. In addition, groups of teachers drafted animations of relevant molecular processes with the help of professional Flash animators. All teacher-generated lessons and animations are available as resources on this website. Upon completion of the workshop, teachers received a stipend. Summer program topics have included the biology of cancer, immunology, and infectious disease, and neurobiology. You can access curriculum projects under our Teacher Materials tab.
